GI Bill – Selected Reserve Program

What is the Montgomery GI Bill Selected Reserve Program?

How does the Montgomery GI Bill work? A branch of the primary MGIB, The Montgomery GI Bill Selected Reserve Program, also referred to as the MGIB-SR bill for short, is an educational and training assistance program available to military personnel who are members of the Selected Reserve. The GI Bill is one of the most comprehensive educational and tuition assistance programs available in the VA benefits program. Able to be used alone, or in conjunction with select other financial assistance programs, the GI Bill is also transferable to dependents. For more information about how to use the GI Bill, contact your local VA education officer today.

What does the MGIB-SR Cover?

The assistance program makes these funds available for service members in pursuit of educational or training certifications, college degrees, flight training, vocational schools, and other types of personal development classes that will benefit the individual in pursuit of a career path. Recently, the government’s Small Business Administration has allowed MGIB-SR benefits to be used to fund business management courses for service members interested in becoming an entrepreneur; furthermore, deficiency courses are also accepted on a case-by-case basis.

How do I Qualify for MGIB-SR?

The MGIB-SR bill is available to service members who have enrolled themselves in and remain as a Selected Reserve service member for a six-year term is eligible for this veteran educational benefits program. Members of the Army, Air Force, Navy, Marines, and Coast Guard Reserve Programs are all eligible for this benefit program. Your Initial Active Duty for Training (IADT) must be completed in full in order to be considered eligible for the program. You must also complete high school, and have proof of your graduation certificate before applying.

Service members who enlist in the Select Reserve while still enrolled in the MGIB-AD program are eligible for two years MGIB-AD benefits, and four years of MGIB-SR benefits.

How Long Am I Eligible for the GI Bill?

As long as your service in the Select Reserve is continued throughout the duration of your agreement, you will be able to access your VA benefits for up to ten years after your application has been accepted. Service members who leave the Select Reserve lose their VA education benefits the day they choose to depart.

Once your MGIB benefits become available for use, you are able to access up to thirty-six months’ worth of full-time educational assistance. Service members who are enrolled in multiple educational assistance programs can expect to retain a maximum of four years’ benefits.
